Have you always wanted to try watercolour but weren’t sure where to start? My 4-week beginner-friendly course is designed to guide you through the fundamentals of watercolour painting, helping you build confidence and develop essential techniques in a supportive and relaxed setting.
Course Details:
Where: The Athenaeum, Newlands, Cape Town
When: Friday mornings, weekly for 4 weeks from 09:00 to 11:00
Duration: 4 weeks (4 x 2-hour sessions)
Fee: R1800 (includes professional-quality watercolour paper & a pipette for controlled water application)
What You’ll Learn:
- The essentials of watercolour: understanding water-to-paint ratios, transparency, and layering
- Brush techniques to create soft blends, crisp edges, and expressive strokes
- Colour mixing and practical exercises to create beautiful, harmonious palettes
- Guided projects to reinforce skills while creating your own artwork
This is a hands-on, structured course with plenty of guidance, making it perfect for absolute beginners. Each session is designed to build on the previous one, ensuring steady progress. Plus, you’ll have access to online tutorials for recap or in case you miss a class.

For those wanting the full experience, I offer an optional add-on kit with everything you need to get started:
Prime Art Iris 18-set (12ml tubes)
Folding palette
Prime Art Gold Size 4 round brush
Prime Art Gold Size 8 round brush
You’re also welcome to bring your own paints and brushes if you prefer! If during the course you wish to purchase the add-on set, this is also possible.
Course Schedule:
This course runs for four weeks on the following dates.
Friday group:
Week 1: Friday, 2 October 2026 2026 09:00 to 11:00
Week 2: Friday, 9 October 2026 09:00 to 11:00
Week 3: Friday, 16 October 2026 09:00 to 11:00
Week 4: Friday, 23 October 2026 09:00 to 11:00
Terms & conditions with regards missed sessions.
As materials, resources and time are allocated to your booking, as well as the space provisioned for which could hinder an alternate booking, we will not accept cancellation refund requests within 7 days of the session unless a replacement can be found in time. Cancellation made 7 or more days prior the session will be credited towards a future equivalent session if applicable (medical/family emergency etc). When you are enrolled in a 4 week block, or other ongoing session, depending on circumstances you may be able to be accommodated in a catch up session if there is one planned in the calendar, otherwise the portion allocated to that session will be forfeited. Beginner classes do have video catch ups made available after each session. Any resource material will be provided to you digitally for you to complete the project in your time. Concessions may be considered for extenuating circumstances, at the discretion of Hey Sweet Art.

I started this course with zero watercolour experience, and Candice made it very easy to settle in and simply have a go. She’s a kind and gentle teacher with endless patience, and you can see how much she enjoys sharing her craft. Everything is well organised, and it’s clear that a lot of time and care has gone into planning the lessons and preparing the course materials.
My working week is full of spreadsheets, revenue targets and quite a lot of pressure, so these classes have given my busy brain a much-needed chance to switch off. I’ve loved putting my phone away and making something with my hands, purely because I enjoy it. The atmosphere is relaxed and never intimidating.
I’d recommend the course to anyone who wants to make more time for creativity and spend a little less time staring at a screen. You really don’t need any previous experience.

I absolutely loved this course! Candice creates a calm, non-judgemental atmosphere with well considered exercises to learn watercolour skills. It was so satisfying ending each lesson with a piece of art I felt proud to share.
