Garden Variety Collection
Garden Variety is a series of smaller works depicting a typical 'garden variety' plastic chair that is so commonplace in many of our own spaces, painted in the negative with a strong grounding shadow and hand-embroidered red thread.
For me, these chairs have become symbols of the creative process itself. The negative space speaks of an outpouring, an ebb and flow of making, when ideas spill out or pause in stillness. The shadow is an anchor, a reminder that even in quiet seasons of creativity, there is grounding, presence, and a steady pulse beneath it all. The red stitching ties subject and shadow together, weaving my story into the work with a gentle nod to how Wendy sewed Peter Pan’s shadow back onto him. It’s playful and also deeply binding: a thread of continuity between the everyday and the imaginative.
Fresh greens and yellows echo springtime, renewal, and new beginnings, while the repetition of chairs gestures toward community: a gathering of seats for me and for others, places to create, to play, to share, and to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. This series is, at its heart, an invitation: to take a seat. To pause, to notice, and to join me in the ongoing conversation of creativity, shadow, and light.
